A school newspaper at a high-profile private university launched an interactive ICE tracking map earlier this month and is asking readers for tips regarding federal law enforcement activity in the area. The University of Chicago newspaper, The Maroon, has been tracking ICE agents since Oct. 21. “ICE Out of Chicago launched a ‘blitz’ last month,” the news article accompanying the map stated. Shruti Sharma of Broadview, Illinois, was arrested Oct. 3 and charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery against a government employee, a third-degree felony, and two counts of resisting/obstructing peace, a first-degree misdemeanor. Left-wing activists have clashed with immigration authorities in the Chicago suburb for months. The University of Chicago condemned violence but evaded questions about the professor arrested at an anti-ICE demonstration. The day before her arrest, she appeared on a left-wing radio show where she criticized the agency.

“These people are terrorizing our community and they’re setting up shop, referring to federal immigration officials. “I mean, in Broadview, ICE was setting up shop in our backyard. Shamelessly exploiting community resources to terrorize the very same community. And so it was really important to join protesters there, not in our town, not in our name, not in our backyard.” She also criticized moderate liberals.

AbdEl-Hadi’s employment status at the school remains a mystery, with school officials ignoring multiple requests for comment on whether she is still actively teaching courses.
